Difference Between Interior Designer and Interior Decorator

An interior designer and interior decorator may sound like the same thing, but the two professions are very different. Their job descriptions and job functions vary, as well as their education and credentials.

The main difference can be found in the name, interior designers design and interior decorators decorate. Depending on your needs, you can find which professional is right for you.

Interior Designers

The design aspect of interior design often has to do with the structure of a space. Designers will sometimes work closely with architects, contractors and developers, but for the most part, they work directly with homeowners and business owners. The layout and functionality of a space is a designer's top priority. Before working hands-on they often use technology or software to plan out their design.

Qualified interior designers often have a background in higher education or experience in formal training. In some states, designers are required to be licensed or registered. This is not always the case, but some designers will go through the process to stand out from the rest. When choosing a designer it's best to know their background and experience to understand where they're coming from and if they're the right choice for you and your needs.

An interior designer might be right for you if you're looking to make more structural changes. Designers have an eye for aesthetics as well as functionality. They can be essential when starting new building projects or home developments, but are also helpful in remodeling or in already developed spaces.

Interior Decorators

No schooling or formal training is required for practicing interior decorators. However, there are many programs available that talented decorators will take advantage of, from coursework to certifications.

The decorating process can include anything from walls, flooring, furnishing, lighting or color palette. If your already existing space just needs a revamp an interior decorator maybe be the direction you take.

What's important to remember is that titles shouldn't determine who you hire. Some interior designers and interior decorators blur the lines between their professions. If your needs align with the work someone does then titles shouldn't matter. It’s best to find who's right for you by looking at individuals and their previous work.
